Portugal vs Czech Republic predictions
At Euro 2016, the first edition of the tournament to feature 24 teams, Portugal were one of the biggest disappointments in the group stage.
Expected to finish top of a section containing Hungary, Iceland and Austria without encountering too many problems along the way, Portugal instead failed to win any of their three games.
On the plus side, they did not lose any of those matches either. But three draws was only enough for third place, meaning Portugal scraped through with the same points and goal difference as Northern Ireland.
A few weeks later, the Portuguese were crowned kings of the continent. Victories over Croatia (after extra time), Poland (on penalties) and Wales sent Fernando Santos’ side through to the final, where they stunned host nation France.
Despite losing Cristiano Ronaldo to injury in the first half, Portugal held out for 90 minutes before scoring the winner through Eder in extra time.
We use this example in part to illustrate that the group stage is not necessarily an indicator of future success. Portugal were mediocre at best in the first phase of the tournament eight years ago, yet it was they who had their hands on the trophy by the end.
It also demonstrates that you do not need to have the strongest squad to win a knockout competition involving a maximum of seven games. Portugal have had much better collections of players than the one they took to France in 2016, yet that remains the only time they have won a European Championship or World Cup.
One could argue that Portugal have the best squad of any nation present in Germany. What is more, no one won as many games, claimed as many points, scored as many goals or conceded as few goals in qualifying.
Portugal sprung a surprise when they went all the way at Euro 2016. A victory this summer would raise fewer eyebrows.
Portugal vs Czech Republic betting tips
Portugal and the Czech Republic will finally get their Euro 2024 campaigns under way on Tuesday.
Portugal/Portugal half-time/full-time – 7/5 (bet365)
The Czech Republic have a decent record at the European Championship, both in their current incarnation and as Czechoslovakia.
The latter were champions in 1976 and twice finished third, while the Czech Republic reached the final in 1996, the semis in 2004, and the quarters in 2012 and 2021. In the last of those editions, they memorably beat the Netherlands in the round of 16.
Reaching the knockout stage will be the objective this time around too, with the Czechs and Turkey likely to battle it out for second spot in Group F. But avoiding defeat by Portugal on Tuesday will be tough.

In their successful qualification campaign, Roberto Martinez’s men were ahead at both half-time and full-time in 80 percent of their games.
The Czechs’ qualifying record was less eye-catching, failing to win exactly half of their eight games despite being drawn in a relatively kind group alongside Albania, Poland, Moldova and the Faroe Islands. Three of their four wins came against the latter duo.
Portugal will have been chomping at the bit to get started and they will look to make a fast start here. The Czechs will struggle to keep them out in the first half.

Over 2.5 goals – 8/11 (Sky Bet)
France and England will argue their attacks are just as well-stocked as Portugal’s, but Didier Deschamps and Gareth Southgate are more pragmatic coaches than Martinez is.
Provided they do not suffer a surprise early exit, there is a good chance that Portugal will be the leading goal-getters at Euro 2024 – just as they were in qualifying.
Cristiano Ronaldo is still around at 39 and the all-time leading international scorer will be keen to add to the 130 goals he already has to his name. Goncalo Ramos is a fine alternative up top.
In behind, Martinez will choose between Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leao, Diogo Jota, Vitinha and Joao Felix.
With Joao Cancelo and Nuno Mendes bombing on from full-back, Portugal will cause problems for the Czech Republic backline throughout this match.

Bruno Fernandes to score or assist – 4/6 (talkSPORT BET)
Bruno Fernandes was a rare bright spot for Manchester United in a disappointing Premier League campaign last time out.
His tendency to make his feelings known on the pitch does not always go down well, but there is no doubting his quality.
Fernandes is a natural creator who pulls the strings for this Portugal team. Expect him to slide passes in behind for his fellow attackers to run onto.
Fernandes also regularly gets himself into scoring positions. Only six players found the back of the net more often in qualifying.
One way or another, Fernandes has a good chance of being directly involved in a Portugal goal against the Czech Republic.
