New Portugal boss Roberto Martinez is optimistic Cristiano Ronaldo can help guide his side to Euro 2024 glory.
Martinez was drafted into the Portugal fold when his contract with the Belgium national team was up, following a poor World Cup showing in Qatar.
The ex-Wigan and Everton manager then flew to Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, taking in the Spanish Super Cup on January 11, before having one-to-one talks with Al Nassr recruit Ronaldo.
Martinez laid down his blueprint to the 38-year-old, not only revealing he is part of his plans, but claiming his ambitions are to win Euro 2024, with Ronaldo at the forefront.
“Cristiano is a player who is completely committed to the national team,” Martinez told The Sun.
“I don’t look at age or other aspects.
“He has the chance to help the team and pass on his experience to other players.”
Ronaldo can become the most capped player in international football history if Martinez opts to throw him into the action.
Portugal face Liechtenstein and Luxembourg in their bid to qualify for the Euro 2024 finals in Germany next year.
Ronaldo had equaled the record of 196 caps which was held by Kuwait forward Badr Al-Mutawa, during Portugal’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Morocco in December.
It has also been revealed Martinez has agreed a reduced pay-off should he be sacked for failing to reach the semi-finals of next years knockouts.
So, with a mixture of experience and youth in his ranks, Martinez remains optimistic of European glory with his new side.
