Spain maestro Pedri’s Euro 2024 is over after suffering an internal lateral sprain on his left knee.
Toni Kroos’ brutal tackle on the Barcelona star forced the midfielder off just six minutes into La Roja’s quarter-final clash with tournament hosts Germany.
The Spanish Football Federation have now confirmed Pedri will have more tests on the injury, but stated it will rule him out for the rest of the tournament.
Kroos – who is playing in his final Euros with his country – first collided with the 21-year-old in the opening minutes, with Pedri being left sprawled out on the ground as a result.
He then recovered and got back to his feet, but the German then challenged him for a second time soon after.
The Real Madrid midfielder left his leg dangling as Pedri ran through, sending him tumbling onto the turf once again.
Spain boss Luis de la Fuente and La Roja’s players all protested to the officials as the Barca midfielder stayed down in pain.
However, Kroos avoided a yellow card.
“I think Germany are fortunate to not get a booking,” talkSPORT’s commentator for the game, ex-England captain Stuart Pearce said.
“Toni Kroos has been looked after there.”
Pedri was soon substituted, with the Barca star looking up to the sky in frustration and covering his hands with his face as he limped off.
He was then replaced by Dani Olmo, who went on to net Spain’s first goal of the evening to put them 1-0 up.
Pedri has battled several injury issues in recent years, missing a large number of games for both club and country.
The loss of Pedri will be a big blow for Spain moving forward. They will also be without Dani Carvajal in the semis following his red card for dragging Jamal Musiala back in the dying stages of the game.
For now, though, La Roja will be celebrating securing a 2-1 victory in extra time, with Florian Wirtz’s equaliser being cancelled out by Mikel Merino’s late winner as La Roja broke German hearts.
