So, ticket sales for the Los Angeles Kings’ two pre-season games in Quebec City aren’t going perfectly.
Next Thursday’s Kings and Boston Bruins matchup is doing decent in the 100s section, but for next Saturday’s matchup against the Florida Panthers and in most of the 200s section for both games, large chunks of seats are still available as of Wednesday afternoon.
Who could have seen that coming? Certainly not the provincial government, which belched up upwards of $7 million to cover the costs of the games.
So what does it tell the hockey world when a prospective NHL market can’t sell out the first two games it’s hosted in five years? Nothing, that’s what it tells us. Actually, it tells us that the good people of Quebec City are too savvy as hockey fans to pay top dollar for pre-season hockey involving teams about which they really don’t have much connection.
You can rest assured the NHL will not be looking at the attendance numbers for these games and putting a black mark against Quebec’s name when it comes to the expansion process. Because it already has enough of those already.
Simply put, Quebec City doesn’t represent the profile the NHL is looking for in a new market. Sure, it has an NHL-sized arena, but anyone can build a rink. It takes a lot more than that, and the reality is Quebec City is not really what the NHL is seeking.
Quebec’s best bet probably would have been a relocation of the Ottawa Senators, a prospect that looks increasingly dim with the announcement that the team and the city have finally come to an agreement in principle to buy land for a new rink.
