You might want to pay attention to the thing formerly known as Twitter the day after the NHL awards. Or maybe not. It might get pretty toxic out there.
That is the day the NHL will reveal the results of its awards voting. The Professional Hockey Writers’ Association votes on five major awards – the Hart, Norris, Calder, Selke and Lady Byng. And this year’s vote, particularly for the Hart, will be dissected like never before.

Auston Matthews was not a finalist this season. There are a lot of people who believe he should have, and they’re not wrong. Neither are the voters who put Nikita Kucherov, Nathan MacKinnon and Connor McDavid ahead of him. In a field this crowded, there are no wrong answers.
It speaks to the variety of the PHWA voters when making these tough decisions. Even though Maple Leafs players are looked upon as gods by their fans, at least according to Mitch Marner, there’s no Toronto bias that skews the results.
The same goes for anybody who thinks there’s an Eastern Conference bias. Not every person who submits a ballot or fan will agree with the winner, but with the group of voters spread out in markets across the NHL, they often tend to get it right.
