French mountain biker Loana Lecomte suffered a sickening crash in the women’s race.
Lecomte went over her handlebars on a tricky, rocky section of the Olympic course in Elancourt, in the southwestern suburbs of Paris.
She appeared to hit her head, before her bike then knocked into her too.
She did not move before the broadcasters cut away, with no replays of the incident shown amid concern for her wellbeing.
Stewards instantly rushed to her aid and a video shows Lecomte being stretchered away from the track.
Spectators can be seen applauding and chanting ‘Loana, Loana’ as she passed them.
French journalist Nicolas Georgereau wrote on X: “Loana Lecomte is still on site. She lost consciousness for a moment but she is fine and was taken care of by the medical service.”
The only thing that has been confirmed is that she would not be able to continue in the race.
There was an outpouring of support for the French rider on social media.
One post read: “Let’s hope there won’t be anything too serious.”
Another read: “All our support for Loana Lecomte.”
A third said: “Hoping she’s okay.”
The women’s mountain bike event took place on Sunday, with the men’s to come on Monday.
The 4.4km route is a pretty gruelling one, with 110 metres of elevation per lap.
And Lecomte’s compatriot Pauline Ferrand-Prévot won the race, with American Hayley Batten winning silver, and Swede Jenny Rissveds landing bronze.
Team GB star Evie Richards came home fifth.
