The NHL Players’ Association filed a grievance over the Philadelphia Flyers’ decision to terminate Ryan Johansen’s contract.
The Flyers terminated Johansen’s contract on Aug. 20, citing a “material breach.” After the news, Johansen’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, said he has a severe hockey injury that requires extensive surgery.
“Since being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, Ryan has worked in good with the club, its medical staff and authorized third party physicians,” Overhardt said in a statement on Aug. 20. “The Flyers’ attempt to terminate Ryan’s contract is disappointing.”

The Flyers acquired Johansen from the Colorado Avalanche after the 32-year-old played all 63 games, recording 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points. Once he joined the Flyers in the Sean Walker trade, the team tried to place him on waivers to assign him to the AHL, but he informed the club of his injury.
“He claimed to be injured when we traded for him, so we had him see the doctors,” Flyers GM Daniel Briere told Philly Hockey Now back in March. “They found an injury, so now he’s going to be rehabbing.”
Johansen did not play for the Flyers or AHL Lehigh Valley during that time.
In 905 career NHL games, Johansen has 202 goals, 376 assists and 578 points split between the Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators and Avalanche. He also has 67 games of playoff experience, recording 19 goals and 35 assists for 54 points.
The NHLPA website says every player is entitled to have any dispute resolved through an “impartial grievance mechanism” that allows the player an equal say in appointing a decision-maker, arbitrator or panel to resolve it.
