Questions still surround Steve McNair’s stunning death, 15 years after he was murdered.
The former NFL MVP took the Tennessee Titans to the Super Bowl in 1999 and was part of one of the closest big game finishes in league history.
But McNair died on July 4, 2009 at age 36, and the murky situation surrounding his death is now the part of a Netflix documentary entitled “Untold: The Murder of Air McNair.”
“15 years ago, the legendary Titan Steve McNair was murdered. Questions still remain of who actually killed him,” Netflix posted in a promotion of the show.
“Gotta watch it,” one fan tweeted.
“What happened to him,” a second fan wrote.
With the 2024 NFL season kicking off on Sept. 5 when Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs face Travis Kelce and the Baltimore Ravens, McNair’s name is picking up on social media.
A dual-threat QB at little-known Alcorn State, McNair finished third in Heisman Trophy voting in 1994.
Players from major schools including Penn State, Alabama and Colorado surrounded him in the Heisman vote.
McNair became the No. 3 overall pick of the Houston Oilers, who later relocated to Nashville and represented Tennessee.
After only starting six games during his initial two pro seasons, McNair completed 52 percent of his passes for 2,665 yards and 14 touchdowns in 1997.
Two years later, the Titans went 13-3 with head coach Jeff Fisher leading Eddie George, Frank Wycheck, Jevon Kearse and McNair to within a few yards of a Super Bowl victory.
Kurt Warner and the Los Angeles Rams held on for a memorable 23-16 victory in Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta.
But McNair was just getting started, finishing third in NFL MVP voting in 2002 and winning the award a year later.
“Miss you Steve,” one fan tweeted. “There is and will be no one like you!”
“I grabbed my cell phone and said, ‘Is what true?’ ” Fisher said in the documentary. “What are you talking about? … ‘Steve was murdered.’ “
McNair was found with multiple gunshot wounds in an apartment in 2009, next to a woman named Sahel “Jenni” Kazemi, who worked at Dave & Buster’s and had spent significant time with him.
Police said that the deaths were a murder-suicide by Kazemi.
“We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair’s passing,” Titans owner Bud Adams said. “He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans.
“He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they deal with his untimely passing.”
McNair appeared in four playoff runs with the Titans and was the first Black quarterback to win NFL MVP.
“They don’t make men like him anymore — he was a beast,” a fan tweeted.
McNair played 13 NFL seasons, passing for 31,304 yards and 174 touchdowns, while running for 3,590 yards and 37 TDs.
