Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur predictions
St James’ Park has been an unhappy hunting ground for Tottenham Hotspur over the last couple of years.
Under the interim management of Cristian Stellini in April 2023, Spurs suffered one of their most embarrassing episodes of the Premier League era.
Newcastle United scored five goals without reply in the first 21 minutes, blowing Tottenham away before the first quarter had elapsed. The north Londoners ultimately lost 6-1, but the scoreline would have been worse had Newcastle not taken their foot off the gas.
The mood at Tottenham was dismal back then following the conclusion of Antonio Conte’s acrimonious tenure. That was not the case on their last trip to the northeast, with Ange Postecoglou having successfully reforged the bond between fans and players.
Even so, Tottenham slumped to a 4-0 loss at St James’ in this fixture last term. It was a decisive result, kick-starting a four-game losing streak which went a long way to costing Spurs a place in the top four.
This season’s trip to Newcastle comes a lot earlier, giving Tottenham the chance to expel some demons before the September international break.
Postecoglou’s side drew 1-1 with Leicester City in their first outing of 2024/25, before thrashing Everton 4-0 last time out. They played some excellent football in that most recent outing, although the weakness of the opposition must be taken into account.
Newcastle are also sitting on four points after beating Southampton 1-0 on the opening weekend, then drawing 1-1 with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Since then Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest on penalties to advance to the third round of the EFL Cup.
Both these teams are targeting Champions League qualification this season. Fifth place may be enough depending on how well English teams perform in Europe, but Newcastle and Tottenham will be unwilling to leave anything to chance. The top four is thus the objective for both Eddie Howe and Postecoglou.
It would be a surprise if both made it given the strength of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool. As such, head-to-head clashes between fellow contenders like this one are doubly important.
Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur betting tips
Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur will butt heads in the first televised Premier League game on Sunday.
Newcastle United to win – 29/20 (BetUK)
For a club that has the richest owners in world football, this has not been the easiest transfer window for Newcastle.
The need to abide by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules have restricted business at St James’, as well as forcing the club to cash in on Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.
On the plus side, Howe has managed to keep hold of important assets like Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, while Sandro Tonali is in line to make his first Premier League appearance since last October after completing his ban for betting offences.

At their best under Howe, Newcastle have been extremely tough to play against at St James’. Their away record was mediocre last season, so the club’s home form became even more important,
Their intensity and energy could be too much for Tottenham to handle on Sunday, just as it was on their last two trips to Newcastle.
⚽ Back Newcastle United to win at 29/20 with BetUK ⚽
Over 3.5 goals – 10/11 (BetUK)
For better or worse, this Tottenham team only knows one way to play.
Even when they were reduced to nine men against Chelsea last term, Postecoglou’s side continued to push bodies forward and defend high up the pitch.
That sort of approach led to some high-scoring away games against the big boys last season.
We have already touched upon the 4-0 loss to Newcastle, but Spurs also went down 4-2 to Liverpool at Anfield. In addition to those defeats, away draws with Arsenal (2-2), Manchester United (2-2) and Manchester City (3-3) also produced more than 3.5 goals, as did a stunning 4-0 victory at Aston Villa.
That is why we recommend that wager this weekend. Tottenham will create chances against a patched-up Newcastle backline, but they will give up plenty of opportunities at the other end too.

Son Heung-min to score any time – 31/20 (BetUK)
Dominic Solanke will miss this game through injury, leaving Son Heung-min to lead the line once more.
The South Korea international notched a brace from that position against Everton last weekend, and he will fancy his chances up against a less-than-ideal Newcastle centre-back pairing of Dan Burn and Emil Krafth.
Son might actually be a better fit up front than Solanke in a game like this. His pace in transition will be useful, while a central berth will allow him to remain up the pitch rather than tracking back on the left wing.
Newcastle are unlikely to keep a clean sheet and Son is by far and away the most probable Spurs goalscorer.
⚽ Tip Son Heung-min to score any time at 31/20 with BetUK ⚽
