Jake Paul’s fight with Mike Tyson is not to everyone’s taste, including Canelo Alvarez.
Paul has been under fire from various figures in the boxing world after announcing he will face heavyweight legend Tyson on July 20, who will be 58 when he steps back in the ring, providing a 31-year age gap between the pair.
Tyson has been releasing training footage in an attempt to appease fans who are justifiably concerned for his health, with his last appearance coming in an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr in 2020.
Alvarez, who has been subject to ongoing call-outs for a showdown from Paul, has not been too complimentary of the event.
He told TMZ Sports: “With Netflix being involved, yes, that’s good.
“But, not [interested] in that kind of fight. I think it’s more [of a] show than a fight.”
Paul has regularly attempted to entice Alvarez into a crossover clash, and the Mexican has refused to rule out the possibility of the pair meeting in the future.
The ‘Problem Child’ has surprising ambitions to become world champion, but has often been lured away from a traditional path by the possibility of money-spinning entertainment fights.
His latest event with Tyson is no different, with the boxing legend and Paul set to earn purses of over $20million to compete in front of 80,000 fans in Texas.
Tyson has received serious medical warnings about taking part in the event, given his age which has attracted significant concern online.
This factor has become particularly concerning given Paul and Tyson’s team are targeting a showdown under professional rules.
Despite the fears, Paul has insisted it was an opportunity that was too good not to present to his upcoming rival.
He said: “In all seriousness Mike, it is such an honour and I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to step in the ring with one of the two most famous people to step in the boxing ring.
“Not only will this be the biggest fight of my life, but I think this has the opportunity to change the history of boxing, and be one of the biggest events of the 21st century.
“It is the biggest moment of my career and the biggest challenge. Everyone has said, ‘Don’t get in the ring with Mike he is too hard of a puncher.’
“That man is a beast, but I am not taking him lightly. July 20, I am hoping to make history and knock out Mike Tyson.”
