Michael Schumacher‘s family plans to auction off the legendary German F1 driver’s personal luxury watch collection within a few weeks.
This development comes amidst ongoing mystery surrounding Schumacher’s health following a severe brain injury sustained during a skiing accident in 2013. The decision to auction off Schumacher‘s watches is reportedly being driven by his wife, Corinna, 55, who has previously sold other family assets including Schumacher‘s private jet and a house in Norway.
The upcoming auction, to be held on May 13 in Geneva, Switzerland, by British auction house Christie’s, will feature eight watches from Schumacher‘s collection. Notably, two of these watches are custom-made gifts from Jean Todt, a close family friend and former Ferrari boss.
One of these watches, a unique FP Journe Vagabondage 1 Model presented to Schumacher by Todt during Christmas 2004 to celebrate his seventh world championship, is expected to fetch between 1.7 million dollars and 3.4 million dollars.
The watch, adorned with the Ferrari emblem, Schumacher‘s helmet design, and symbols representing his seven titles, bears an engraved message from Todt to Schumacher. Another gift from Todt, a customised Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch from 2003, is also part of the auction, estimated to sell for between 255,000 dollars and 425,000 dollars.
Christie’s will benefit from the auction
Additionally, five limited edition 2004 FP Journe watches will be available, collectively expected to fetch between 1.8 million dollars and 3 million dollars.
Among the notable pieces is a “historically important, extremely rare and highly attractive” 14K gold Rolex Daytona gifted to Schumacher by his long-time manager, Willi Weber.
Weber, who expressed despair over Schumacher’s health in recent years, disclosed that he had been estranged from the family since 2021.
Corinna, who has fiercely safeguarded Schumacher‘s privacy since the accident, not revealing much about his condition, now manages the family’s substantial fortune of 970 million dollars.
Christie‘s expressed gratitude to the Schumacher family for entrusting them with these iconic timepieces and noted the significance of the auction for both watch enthusiasts and Formula 1 fans. The auction house eagerly anticipates showcasing these unique items and engaging with passionate collectors during the upcoming event in Geneva.
