Two-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappenhas practically achieved it all: two drivers’ championships, one constructors’ championship with Red Bull Racing, he has a spectacular girlfriend and millions in the bank. But according to his father, Jos Verstappen, ‘Mad Max’ could soon leave the tracks precisely because he has nothing left to win.
Currently the Dutch driver, as well as the rest of F1, are enjoying the off-season, after Max set a new record by winning 15 of the 22 races of the year, in addition to taking 146 points ahead of the year’s runner-up, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
‘Max feels complete and could leave the sport’, Jos says
In a recent interview, Jos Verstappen commented, “Max is done with everything now. Especially when you have won the championship, then the pressure is gone and it becomes less exciting. For Max, I think it was important that he broke the record with those wins. I think that’s the most important thing.”
“Max has nothing to prove anymore, so he could leave F1 very soon,” he added.
Competition in 2023 has him excited
However, Jos, 50, added: “To be honest, I think everything will be a bit closer next year, that’s also the intention of this regulation. Good battles on track and a good championship all the way to the end would be fantastic.”
Max Verstappen himself has hinted, on several occasions, that he might pursue something else despite being only 25 years old. One of the track legends who would be waiting for him to race in other categories, such as LeMans, is double champion Fernando Alonso, who recently commented that he would like to race alongside ‘Super Max’ after he leaves Formula 1.
The 20 drivers who will compete for the title next season, which will start in March at the Bahrain circuit, have already been confirmed.
