Manchester United vs Newcastle United predictions
We are into the final week of the Premier League season and these two teams still have something to play for.
Manchester United and Newcastle United, who are separated in the standings by just three points, are both contenders for European football.
Newcastle currently occupy sixth spot, which will be a Europa League berth if Manchester City beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final later this month.
In that scenario, seventh would be the sole Europa Conference League place. Chelsea have that prize in their hands right now, with United three points behind them as things stand.
Erik ten Hag’s side did not help themselves at the weekend with a 1-0 home loss to Arsenal. The Gunners were not at their best at Old Trafford, yet they still eased to victory to go top of the league again.
There were mitigating factors. Indeed, given the sheer number of players who were missing through injury, a 1-0 defeat was not too bad a result. The likes of Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford played no part against a full-strength Arsenal team.
Ten Hag will hope to at least have Martinez, Fernandes and Rashford back for Wednesday, when United will be looking to avoid an ignominious 10th home defeat of this Premier League campaign.
The Red Devils rank ninth in the division’s home table overall, marginally ahead of Fulham and West Ham United. Old Trafford is no longer a venue that rival clubs fear.
That is something United must address next term. We do not yet know whether it will be Ten Hag’s responsibility to do so, or whether the club will look to replace him over the summer.
The Dutchman could be given a stay of execution because of the paucity of other options, although there is an argument that United are one of the Premier League’s worst-coached teams right now. That does not reflect well on their manager.
Manchester United vs Newcastle United betting tips
Manchester United and Newcastle United are both still in the mix for European qualification.
Newcastle to win – 13/10 (Paddy Power)
Both these teams have gone backwards compared to last season, when Manchester United finished third and Newcastle United finished fourth.
Yet Newcastle’s fall has been less dramatic and more understandable. Securing a top-four place last term represented an overachievement. It was always going to be difficult to replicate that, and an injury crisis throughout the campaign made it near-impossible.
Still, Newcastle are exactly the type of club that ought to take the Europa League seriously. Victories over Manchester United and Brentford this week would secure sixth spot, leaving Newcastle to wait and see whether Manchester City can do them a favour in the FA Cup final.

Eddie Howe’s side were held to a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion last time out, but they have been in pretty good form of late, losing only one of their last eight matches.
Newcastle will also draw confidence from the fact they won 3-0 at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup earlier this season.
⚽ Tip Newcastle to win at 13/10 with Paddy Power ⚽
Over 3.5 goals – 3/4 (Paddy Power)
In fairness to Manchester United, they have at least been entertaining to watch for much of the season.
Their games since the turn of the year have been particularly enjoyable for their end-to-end nature and all-round chaos factor.
Were it not for Andre Onana and questionable opposition finishing, United would be lower down the table: they rank a dismal fifth-bottom for expected goals against in 2023/24.
Newcastle have also been compulsory viewing for much of the campaign. Only the top three have scored more goals than the Magpies, for whom Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak have been outstanding in attack.
Newcastle’s fixtures have averaged a league-high 3.78 goals, partly because they have not been as defensively secure as Howe would have liked.
Both teams will line up with weakened backlines on Wednesday, so we could be in store for an exciting encounter.

Anthony Gordon to score any time – 15/8 (Paddy Power)
Isak is Newcastle’s top scorer with 20 goals and the Sweden international is duly the favourite in this market for the meeting with Manchester United.
Gordon is available at slightly longer odds, however, and that will appeal to many. The England international has enjoyed a fantastic campaign in the northeast, notching 10 goals and providing as many assists.
Leandro Trossard, Arsenal’s left-sided forward, scored against United at the weekend. Gordon plays in the same position and will cause Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro plenty of problems with his directness and intensity.
Gordon has become much more reliable in front of goal, with his end product better than it was during his Everton days.
