Newcastle are in the unfamiliar position of heading to Old Trafford as favourites on Wednesday night, as they head into the big match in much the better form of the two sides, losing just one of their last eight matches, winning four of their last six.
Eddie Howe’s side have propelled themselves into sixth place in the Premier League table, which at this moment in time is the final guaranteed European qualification spot due to eighth placed Manchester United’s participation in the FA Cup final next week.
The Magpies are only ahead of Chelsea on goal difference though, but the 10-goal gap means that wins in their final two outings, at Old Trafford on Wednesday at Brentford on Sunday would in all likelihood guarantee a place in Europe for the Tyneside club next season.
Equally, that sixth spot could be all but sealed with a win in Manchester, should Chelsea are also in action on Wednesday away at Brighton, lose, which would leave three points a monumental goal difference swing between the two sides ahead of the final day.
Newcastle have struggled away from home on the whole this season but have recorded two wins from their last three games on the road, and will be buoyed by their 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.
Manchester United on the other hand have won just two of their last 11 Premier League matches since mid-February, and just one of their last eight, heading into Wednesday’s match on the back of demoralising back-to-back defeats.
Erik ten Hag’s side have slipped to eighth in the table and face the all too real possibility of missing out on European football entirely next season, despite having finished as high as third in the league last season, also winning the Carabao Cup.
The Red Devils currently sit three points off the top six but have a far inferior goal difference to the teams above them, effectively needing to make up four points on both Newcastle and Chelsea for the European aspirations with just two matches of the season remaining.
The Manchester side do have the safety net of a second route into Europe next season though, with the winner of the FA Cup guaranteed a place in the Europa League group stage next season.
The only downside of that being that they must beat league title favourites, defending champions and arch rivals Manchester City in the final at Wembley next week should they wish to play in Europe next season, if they finish outside the top seven.
United have won only one of their last four matches at Old Trafford ahead of Wednesday’s visit of Newcastle, their final home game of the season.
Newcastle have won each of the last three meetings between the two sides, but have won at Old Trafford in the league only once in the last 52 years.
