Manchester City vs Luton Town predictions
We are into the run-in and this is the stage of the season when Manchester City tend to come alive.
This time last year, Pep Guardiola’s side came from behind to overhaul Arsenal and take the Premier League title, their third in a row.
Two victories over the Gunners proved crucial: City went on to win the league by a six-point margin. One defeat by Mikel Arteta’s men would have handed the prize to Arsenal instead.
From here on in, though, there are no remaining head-to-head clashes between any of the three contenders, City, Arsenal and Liverpool.
That means the destination of this season’s title will be determined by the results in other games. Arsenal are top of the table so the trophy is technically theirs to lose, but third-placed Manchester City are the favourites with the bookmakers.
There are a few reasons for that. One is that Guardiola and the bulk of his squad have been in this position many times before.
City’s players know exactly what it takes to get the job done in a title race. Some wrote them off when they trailed Arsenal last term. Few are willing to bet against them 12 months on.
Another factor in the holders’ favour is that they have the kindest remaining fixtures. The current position in the table of their upcoming opponents reads: 18th, 10th, 17th, 11th, 13th, fourth and seventh.
A trip to Tottenham Hotspur will not be easy, but no one would really be surprised if City took 21 points from the 21 still on offer.
This weekend, the task of somehow halting them falls to Luton Town, who need the points for their own reasons.
In truth, it is difficult to see how the Hatters can leave the Etihad Stadium with anything. Rob Edwards would be forgiven for adopting a mindset of damage limitation.
Manchester City vs Luton Town betting tips
Manchester City are huge favourites as Luton Town visit the Etihad Stadium, but can the underdogs spring a surprise?
Manchester City -2 handicap – 8/11 (Betfred)
Manchester City were involved in a thrilling Champions League encounter in midweek, as they drew 3-3 with Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final.
That gives City a narrow advantage ahead of the return fixture at the Etihad, but Guardiola will be taking nothing for granted.
The City boss will already have an eye on Madrid’s visit to Manchester on Wednesday, which makes it tough to predict his XI here.

But City cannot afford to take their eye off the ball in the Premier League, so we should not expect wholesale changes to their line-up.
Luton Town have been more competitive than many expected this season. After a much-needed, last-gasp 2-1 victory over Bournemouth last weekend, they are inside the bottom three on goal difference alone.
But City should get through this game without too much trouble. A goal by a three-goal margin or more is a distinct possibility.
⚽ Tip Manchester City with a -2 handicap at 8/11 with Betfred ⚽

Luton over 0.5 goals – 11/10 (Betfred)
For all that we expect Manchester City to come out on top without hitting top gear, the odds on a Luton goal make it a worthwhile bet.
For one, City have not been quite as solid defensively this season as we have grown accustomed to. They are not yet into double figures for Premier League clean sheets and only average one every 3.5 games.
In only one of their last five top-flight matches have City’s opponents failed to find the back of the net.
Luton, for their part, have scored in 19 of their last 20 Premier League matches, a remarkable record for a team battling against relegation to the Championship.
The Hatters have failed to score in only five games in 2023/24, while they have already made the net bulge three times against City (once in the league and twice in the FA Cup).
⚽ Back Luton to score at 11/10 with Betfred ⚽
Phil Foden to score any time – 9/10 (Betfred)
Phil Foden is in the form of his life right now.
The England international scored another stunning goal against Real Madrid, while his last Premier League appearance produced a brilliant hat-trick against Aston Villa.
Foden was rested in City’s 4-2 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend, but that is all the more reason to expect him to start against Luton Town. Guardiola will likely use this opportunity to rest other members of his side.
Foden has looked incredibly sharp in the final third for much of 2024 and he is continuing to be decisive at the top end of the pitch.
Do not be surprised if Foden gets his name on the scoresheet against Luton this weekend.
⚽ Choose Phil Foden as an anytime goalscorer at 9/10 with Betfred ⚽
