Manchester City got their fourth consecutive defence of the Premier League title off to a flying start by extending an incredible record.
But whilst City celebrated an opening day win at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were left with plenty of questions about the season that lies ahead of them, with co-owner Todd Boehly leaving before full time.
Pep Guardiola’s side will be looking to win a record breaking fifth title in a row this term and got that mission off to the perfect start with a 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.
Erling Haaland and ex-Chelsea man Mateo Kovacic got on the score sheet to fire the away side to victory.
Their result means City have won each of their last ten Premier League matches by two or more goals.
That’s the longest such run in the competition’s history, extending their record which stood at nine.
In addition to this, their final three wins of the 2023/24 campaign all came against London clubs.
That included a 4-0 win over Fulham, a 2-0 victory against Tottenham and beating West Ham 3-1 on the final game of the season to clinch the title.
Man City have also shaken off a less desirable stat.
They have now won an away Premier League match without Rodri for the first time since February 2022.
Guardiola’s side had lost their last four without him.
Chelsea, meanwhile, were left feeling frustrated by their performance – including club legend John Obi Mikel.
It was a strange opening day for the Blues, with Boehly, who was spotted in the stands for the game, seen leaving before the final whistle.
TV cameras tracked him shuffling past people on his row and heading behind into the stands.
The Chelsea chairman and the club’s other chiefs have been questioned in recent times, with home grown products Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah amongst the players left out of the squad amid their ongoing transfer sagas raising alarms.
Both stars were left off the match day programme too.
Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling also released a statement after being left out of the squad.
