A guard of honour for your rivals?!
As Manchester City headed up to claim their trophy at Wembley, Manchester United’s players formed a tunnel to clap them.
And live on talkSPORT afterwards, Adrian Durham and Darren Bent gave their thoughts on it…
Durham: “I’ve just been told it’s a nice touch that the United players are making a tunnel for the City players as they head towards the steps to pick up the Community Shield and their medals.
“I can’t imagine Roy Keane thinking something like that is a nice touch. Could you imagine him being part of a tunnel, applauding the City players?”
Bent: “When I’m looking at Roy down there and I’m surprised he’s not kicked the desk over, the ITV desk over because he’s there watching.”
Durham: “He’s got his arms in his pocket and he’s not even looking.”
Bent: “He’s not even looking at them walking up the stairs. He’s probably thinking I would never have allowed this in my day. No chance. I’m even going back to your Franny Lee and George Best days.”
Durham: “There’s no way they’d be applauding each other in a tunnel saying oh well done lads. There’s whatever happened to rivalry. I’m not saying it’s a Community Shield. I get it.
“And I’m not saying they should be kicking lumps out of each other or aiming punches at each other. but blimey I thought that was a little bit too much for my liking. I want to bring some proper rivalry back into football.”
‘We had belief’
And Oscar Bobb has now spoken to the media following Manchester City’s 7-6 win on penalties at Wembley.
When asked about the victory, Bobb said: “[It’s a] great feeling.
“The first time we have won it in three, four years and to do it with a young group is great.
“We had belief all the way through, we kept going, didn’t get too downbeat.
“It’s another trophy, it’s a great start. It gives us a lot of confidence and no negatives.”
On his assist, he admitted: “I thought it was Erling [Haaland]!
“I thought it was going to be Erling [on the end of his cross], but fortunately Bernardo Silva got there.
And then when asked whether fans will see more of him this season, Bobb simply stated: “Hopefully!”
Brilliant Bobb
Oscar Bobb continued his superb pre-season form at Wembley this afternoon, providing the assist for Man City’s equaliser.
The Norweigan has been awarded Player of the Match and deservedly so after a great performance.
He was a constant menace on the right wing, sending in brilliant crosses and creating chances regularly.
His pace and dribbling are also clear assets and he seems to fit into Pep Guardiola’s style of play.
Bobb has definitely done enough to warrant a starting spot next weekend as City take on Chelsea in their Premier League opener, but will Pep keep faith in him?
Poisoned chalice
Or is it the perfect way to start?
The team that won the Community Shield has only gone on to win that season’s Premier League in one of the last 13 campaigns.
That won’t be good reading for Pep Guardiola!
But he’ll be hopefully of being an anomaly to that trend!
The first of many?
Kevin De Bruyne lifts the Community Shield!
Will this be the first of many for Manchester City this season?
They’re aiming for a fifth consecutive Premier League title and will of course be going for European glory again too.
To get their hands on some silverware already is the perfect way to start!
How’s your luck?
Manchester United have now been runners-up 10 times in the Charity/Community Shield.
That is more often than any other side in the competition’s history
It’s a penalty defeat at Wembley this time around…
