Jerry York remembers the day that Johnny Gaudreau and his little brother, Matthew, came to Boston College for a visit. They had just decommitted from Northeastern University and were looking for a place to play.
York remembers after the visit, “Matty turned to Johnny and said, ‘Let’s go here.’ God bless Matty for that.”
Fourteen years later, York was mourning the death of both of them after learning, along with the hockey world, about their senseless and tragic deaths Thursday night. York, of course, was shattered, but was kind enough to share his memories with The Hockey News for a tribute on them in the next issue.

York coached at Boston College for 28 years and won four national titles – including one with Johnny Gaudreau in 2012. He wants to see a statue of Gaudreau erected outside the Conte Arena, similar to the Doug Flutie statue that has sat outside the school’s Alumni Stadium since 2008.
It would be a fitting tribute to a player and person who achieved superstar status at Boston College but never carried himself like one. Here’s more, including an excerpt of an interview with York:
