Max Verstappen couldn’t contain his shock when he watched back Lance Stroll’s crash with Daniel Ricciardo in the Chinese Grand Prix.
The F1 world champion won his fourth race of the 2024 season on Sunday, one that was certainly filled with action and drama.
On lap 21 of the race, a safety car was deployed as smoke was seen coming out the back of Valtteri Bottas’ Kick Sauber car.
But just before the restart, a group the drivers were all bunched up and Stroll was seen crashing into the back of Ricciardo before a turn.
Ricciardo’s RB was briefly lifted into the air and the Australian had to retire for the second race in a row as a result, with the safety car making a swift return to the track.
The incident was shown to Verstappen along with his fellow podium finishers Lando Norris and Sergio Perez in the cooldown room after.
“Oh, oh my god!” he shouted as he watched Stroll collide into the back of Ricciardo on the replay.
The Dutchman then appeared to offer a slight laugh before covering his mouth with his hand, before adding: “No way!”
With Norris jokingly adding: “That’s all because of you.”
To which Verstappen humorously replied: “It’s my fault.”
Stroll was seemingly frustrated with the collision and alluded to his Aston Martin team radio that it wasn’t his fault.
“This idiot just slammed on the brake. Check wing damage,” he said before going on to seal a 15th placed finish in Shanghai.
His and Ricciardo’s collision wasn’t the only one as Kevin Magnussen clipped the back-right of Yuki Tsunoda, who also failed to finish.
There was also drama off the track as an Alpine mechanic was hit by a loose tire from Pierre Gasly’s car, though he was luckily confirmed okay.
Verstappen went on to win his first ever Chinese Grand Prix and did so by finishing almost 14 seconds faster than McLaren’s Norris.
The winner’s Red Bull teammate Perez came third to seal yet more podium finishes for the constructors who continue to dominate the grid.
