VAR has become a staple of football which means fans can expect it to be back in use for Euro 2024 in Germany this summer.
Video Assistant Referee technology made its debut at an international tournament when it was introduced at the World Cup 2018.
The implementation was deemed enough of a success by football bigwigs to be rolled out across all the major European leagues in the years since Russia.
However, the use of VAR has been the subject of numerous calls for change due to its contentious decisions happening on an almost weekly basis.
Is VAR being used at the Euro 2024?
Yes, VAR will be deployed at the tournament in Germany.
UEFA will employ the same semi-automated offside technology that’s present in their European competitions, such as the Champions League, and was in action at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The AI-based tech uses 12 dedicated tracking cameras to create three-dimensional models of a player’s skeleton to determine whether any part of their body is offside.
This 3D animation is then shown on the big screens inside the stadium to provide more clarity for fans unlike in the Premier League.
It is also made available to UEFA’s broadcast partners to screen for supporters watching at home.
For Euro 2024, Adidas’s FUSSBALLLIEBE – ‘football love’ in English – match ball features a chip designed to improve VAR accuracy.

UEFA’s semi-automated offside system in the Champions League relies on AI alone, but the Euros will have the same sensor technology seen in the Adidas Al Rihla that was used in Qatar.
It is capable of recording data 500 times a second to detect when exactly the ball has been kicked and the key behind determining that Cristiano Ronaldo did NOT score Portugal’s first goal against Uruguay.
