Darren Bent thought that Roy Keane ‘was going to kick his desk over’ after seeing Manchester City were given a guard of honour by Manchester United.
The rivals went head to head on Saturday afternoon with Pep Guardiola’s side winning the first trophy of the season in the form of the Community Shield.
Alejandro Garnacho gave United the lead in 82nd minute, before Bernardo Silva levelled the game in the closing stages to take it to penalties.
Despite Andre Onana’s best efforts to get in the head of Erling Haaland, it was City who came away victorious.
With Kevin De Bruyne leading City up the Wembley steps to claim their trophy, United’s players did the respectful thing and formed a guard of honour as they applauded their opponents for their success.
While it was a classy thing to do, talkSPORT’s commentary team of Adrian Durham and Darren Bent couldn’t help but ponder what Roy Keane – who was on punditry duty for ITV – would have thought of such an act of sportsmanship.
And it’s safe to say they expected a fiery reaction from the Irish legend.
Durham said: “I’ve just been told it’s a nice touch that the United players are making a tunnel for the City players as they head towards the steps to pick up the Community Shield and their medals.
“I can’t imagine Roy Keane thinking something like that is a nice touch.

“Could you imagine him being part of a tunnel, applauding the City players?”
To which Bent replied: “When I’m looking at Roy down there and I’m surprised he’s not kicked the desk over, the ITV desk over because he’s there watching.”
Durham, who was keeping a close on Keane, responded by saying: “He’s got his arms in his pocket and he’s not even looking.”
Bent then pointed out: “He’s not even looking at them walking up the stairs.
“He’s probably thinking, ‘I would never have allowed this in my day. No chance.’ I’m even going back to your Franny Lee and George Best days.”
Agreeing with Bent, Durham said: “There’s no way they’d be applauding each other in a tunnel saying, ‘Oh well done lads.’
“And I’m not saying they should be kicking lumps out of each other or aiming punches at each other, but blimey I thought that was a little bit too much for my liking.
“I want to bring some proper rivalry back into football.”
United will be hoping they can bounce back from their defeat to Man when they face Fulham in the Premier League opener next Friday – a match that will be exclusively live on talkSPORT.
