Liverpool’s search for midfield reinforcements continue with reports emerging they are turning their attention to South America.
The Reds’ frailties in the middle of the park have been exposed this season, particularly with injuries to the likes of Thiago, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita.
Veteran James Milner, 36, has not been the ideal solution, while Arthur Melo has been drafted in on loan as a short term solution.
Jurgen Klopp will need to overhaul his midfield in the coming transfer windows, with Jude Bellingham likely to be the number one target.
Just one addition will unlikely be enough, however, with the Reds looking at possible other targets.
One such name mooted is Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes, with Liverpool scouts monitoring the 21-year-old’s progress.
Gomes even commented on the links to Liverpool in a recent Instagram comment.
He said: “Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”
There is certainly a lot to like about the midfielder. Just one player has made more tackles per 90 minutes than Gomes this season (4.5), according to WhoScored.
He also has a dribble success rate of 72 per cent, the eighth highest in the Brazilian league out of 125 players to have attempted 25 or more.
While he may not be Premier League ready just yet, he could be just the sort of player that learns from the experienced of the likes of Henderson, Milner, Fabinho and Thiago before being given a chance.
