Ryan Garcia admits he was ‘crying his eyes out’ before his fight with Devin Haney.
‘King Ry’ caused a monumental upset on Saturday as he dropped Haney three times en route to a majority decision victory at the Barclays Centre in New York.
Although the 25-year-old entered the fight as a significant underdog, there was an immense amount of pressure on his shoulders.
Garcia’s heart had been called into question after he saw out a count on his knee against Gervonta Davis last year.
And a loss to Haney would have meant another arduous rebuilding process to get himself back into the world title picture.
So despite the confidence in his step as he entered the ring, Garcia admits he had to overcome his demons before climbing through the ropes.
On Wednesday, Garcia posted three teary-eyed snaps on Twitter, taken earlier in the day before the fight, with the caption: “The emotions before a huge fight don’t judge.
“Had to let a cry out. Don’t meme me.”
He later added on an X Space: “Nobody knows I was crying my eyes out before the [Devin Haney] fight.
“I could not contain myself, the pressure was overwhelming. I needed that cry though.
“I just wanna show people what it feels like before a big event. I had to let that cry out, then I felt better.”
Garcia’s stock has undoubtedly risen since upsetting the odds against Haney but his quest for a world title continues.
Haney’s WBC super-lightweight crown was supposed to be on the line in the fight.
However, Garcia made himself ineligible to compete for the green and gold strap after weighing in 3.2lbs over the 140lbs limit.
Garcia is now expected to move up to welterweight for his next fight as ‘King Ry’ insisted his body can no longer dip below 143lbs.
A bout against Britain’s Conor Benn has been talked up by Garcia while ‘King Ry’ also fancies a scrap with WBC and WBO super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora as well.
