Following criticism, Eddie Hearn has decided to clarify his comments about a potential undisputed clash between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.
According to reports, there are ongoing talks for WBC champion Fury and unified WBA, WBO and IBF champion Usyk to clash in an undisputed fight in March 2023 in Saudi Arabia.
Previously, promoter Eddie Hearn, had said that the fight would not be very good to watch due to both men’s styles and he favoured Usyk to beat Fury.
“Tyson Fury doesn’t want to fight Oleksandr Usyk,” Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show. “But he may have to because the money might be so big.
“It’s actually not a very good fight to watch, but it’s an intriguing fight to watch, because I think they’re going to negate each other a lot with movement.
“I don’t think Fury’s going to be chomping at the bit to fight Usyk.
“I think he could beat him, but I would favour Oleksandr Usyk in that fight.
“Just because I think he’s so good. Fury’s good as well, but Usyk is just… They’re both very, very intelligent boxers.”
This drew criticism from Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, who said in his column for the The Daily Star, “He said that Deontay Wilder would beat Tyson on three occasions. He said that we would not sell any tickets in America yet it broke the record for a heavyweight fight in Las Vegas.
“He said that Dillian Whyte would beat Tyson and we wouldn’t do any business for that fight yet it broke the Wembley box-office record and our man won by knockout.
“He said that Anthony Joshua would knock out Usyk twice. He even said Canelo Alvarez would beat Dmitry Bivol.
“His boxing predictions are about as good as haemorrhoids would be for Frankie Dettori.”
Since then, Hearn has clarified his position in an interview with Intu Boxing and he has even done a U-turn in terms of his fight prediction.
“I got criticism on that because I said I don’t think it’s a great fight… but I think it’s a compelling fight,” Hearn said.
“You’ve got two very awkward, tricky customers. For a hardcore boxing fan I think it would be fascinating, but they wouldn’t just start knocking lumps out of each other.
“I probably give the edge to Tyson Fury because of his size.
“I just feel like I’ve always overlooked him in fights, like [Wladimir] Klitschko, [Deontay] Wilder, so I should give him the respect that he deserves. But I do think Usyk is very tough to beat.”
