Euro 2024 gets underway this week with Germany playing host to the continent’s best teams including England and Scotland.
The 17th edition of the UEFA tournament has been squeezed into the football calendar after Euro 2020 was delayed a year and the Qatar World Cup was also pushed back.
Euro 2024 is the first international competition since Russia 2018 to go ahead in its assigned slot.
The cost of previous tournaments being delayed and rescheduled meant UEFA and FIFA had to make significant changes to mitigate the increased risks of player injuries.
These include how many substitutes each manager is allowed to make and how many players each squad can have.
How many subs are allowed at Euro 2024?
UEFA have confirmed that the Euro 2024 will permit the use of five substitutes, using the rule that has been introduced in all major leagues.
As was the case during the 2022 World Cup, managers only have three windows to introduce all five changes during the 90 minutes.
These three windows exclude half-time and any match delays but do count if they take place during any drinks breaks for hot weather.
Again, concussion rules dictate that any player who is replaced with a head injury will not count as using one of the five subs.
In addition, a sixth substitution is allowed should a game reach extra time during the knockout stages.
How big will Euro 2024 squads be?
UEFA have confirmed that countries will be able to have the increased 26-man squads for the tournament.
Originally, the squads were set to be scaled back to 23 players but officials have now decided to retain the bigger quota.
Teams had to provide UEFA with a list containing a minimum of 23 players and a maximum of 26 before the tournament.
England have confirmed their squad for the tournament, leaving out some big names ahead of the trip to Germany.
Despite the increased number allowed, there was no space for Jack Grealish and James Maddison while Harry Maguire missed out through injury.
The extended squad sizes will allow countries to rotate more with their line-ups and have more options to select from, reducing the risk of injuries.
