An intriguing press conference unfolded in Miami as Lewis Hamilton fielded inquiries regarding Adrian Newey, who announced his departure from Red Bull Racing earlier in the week.
Newey will likely not work on another car design for Red Bull, however he will not be able to work for a new Formula 1 team until after the 2025 season.
As such, Hamilton may well get the chance to work with the famed designer at Ferrari as the Italian team seeks to recalibrate their technical department in search of a first championship since 2007.
Sergio Perez, who currently works with Newey at Red Bull, was quick to praise his current designer.
“He will have an immediate impact wherever he goes, he’s intelligent and hard-working, he’s more than a designer, he can influence even the strategies, the set-up… the whole weekend,” Perez admitted.
“He is a great F1 personality, although Red Bull will remain strong and I don’t think there will be any more departures of important people.
What did Lewis Hamilton say about Adrian Newey
Hamilton was then asked the question about possibly linking up with Newey with the Scuderia.
“I mean, Adrian’s known for… he’s got such a great history, track record, and has obviously just done an amazing job through his career, in engaging with teams and the knowledge he has,” said Hamilton.
“I think he would be an amazing addition. I think they’ve [Ferrari] already got a great team, they’re already making huge progress, strides forwards – their car’s quicker this year. But yeah, it would be a privilege to work with him.”
Newey, aged 65, boasting over 20 world titles to his name, recently announced his departure from Red Bull after 19 years, fueling speculation about his potential move to Ferrari, with Aston Martin also in the mix.
When asked whether Hamilton’s negotiations with Ferrari were impacted by the possible availability of Newey, the British driver refused to give anything information away.
“This is all private conversation stuff… if I was to do a list of people that I would love to work with, he would absolutely be at the top of it,” said Hamilton.
“From my perspective, when I joined McLaren, I think it was an evolution of his car… I think I got there just after he left. That car had evolved from a concept that he had worked on, so I felt privileged that I’d had the chance to touch something that he’d worked on.”
