Georges St-Pierre has claimed he was offered a hybrid boxing and MMA fight with Floyd Mayweather.
However, the pair were unable to agree on a set of rules for the contest and so it fell through.
GSP is a former two-weight UFC world champion and is widely considered to be one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time.
After retiring from the sport in 2017 following a historic win over Michael Bisping that saw him capture UFC middleweight gold, he received a proposal from a promoter who was keen to put on a mixed-rules fight with him and Mayweather.
The promoter had teased a “fair compromise” between boxing and MMA rules, but that compromise only stretched to the fight being staged in an Octagonal ring and St-Pierre being allowed to use spinning back fists.
Recalling how the bout with the boxing Hall of Famer was brought to his attention, St-Pierre told Covers: “There was a promoter that wanted to organise it.
“The way they described it, it was a fair compromise between boxing and MMA against Floyd Mayweather.
“I was retired and was like ‘You know what, this one, I’m interested’. Then he flew in, I was in Austin, Texas.
“He flew in on a private plane, he landed and I said ‘What is the deal?’
“He said, ‘It’s boxing fight but in an octagonal ring’. I’m like ‘Okay, but what’s the rules, what’s the compromise?’
“‘It’s an Octagonal ring, and you’re allowed to do spinning back fists. I’m like ‘Wow, that’s not really a fair compromise. Allow me to throw kicks’.
“He was like, ‘Oh, he’s never going to accept that. I said ‘Okay, kicks higher above the belt.’
“‘No, no, it’s not going to work’. I said, ‘Okay, then allow me to throw him down’.
“‘Oh, he’s never wanted to go to the floor’. I’m like ‘I’m not saying go to the floor, I’m saying throw him down. Take him down and then we stand back up’.
“And he’s like, ‘No, no.’ I was like you don’t allow me to use my legs, use my takedowns, I’m not talking about going to the ground, just my throw.
“‘Forget it because it’s a trap, I’m not that stupid.’ He said, ‘Okay, I’m going to get back to you’.
“They went and talked to, I guess, Floyd or one of his representatives and then it didn’t work.”
St-Pierre has not returned to competition since hanging up his gloves.
However, Mayweather has enjoyed a lucrative run in exhibition boxing after calling time on his 50-0 pro career seven years ago.
‘TBE’ first took part in a non-scoring bout against Japanese kickboxing sensation Tenshin Nasukawa back in 2018.
Since then he has gone on to face famous content creators Logan Paul and Deji Olatunji as well as reality television star Aaron Chalmers.
He is estimated to have earned somewhere in the region of £200million from his crossover bouts.
