Gareth Southgate has failed as England manager – because he has never won anything in eight years.
That is the verdict from talkSPORT pundit and France legend Emmanuel Petit, who insisted England should be doing better with the quality that they have.
Speaking live on talkSPORT Drive with Andy Goldstein and Andy Townsend, Petit said: “He reminds me, sometimes, of Didier Deschamps with the quality that he has and on the bench as well. A huge group of quality players.
“We are so frustrated because he cannot reach the pinnacle with them and to make them play beautiful football, romantic football.
“So, yes, it is frustrating to watch, it must be frustrating to play as a player and he hasn’t won any medals with England.
“He has been manager for the last eight years, he did reach the semi-final [of the 2018 World Cup]. He did some good runs in competitions.
“But, for me, he has failed. Simple as that. Having been the manager for so long, with the quality of English football, he should have won at least one medal.”
Southgate has come under fire for his style of play at Euro 2024 after failing to light up the tournament despite having world-class players such as Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Phil Foden.
But England are in the quarter-final where they face Switzerland having topped their group, albeit by scoring two goals against Serbia, Slovenia and Denmark.
Southgate took over in 2016 with the country in disarray following the scandal of Sam Allardyce and just months after Roy Hodgson resigned following defeat to Iceland at the European Championship.
Since then, the former Middlesbrough coach has taken charge of 99 games, winning 63, and has lost just 17.
He has also overseen seven knockout fixture victories, more than any other England coach.
When the Three Lions line up on Saturday, they might be in a different formation amid clamour for change this tournament.
talkSPORT understands Southgate is considering changing his side to a back-three to negate Switzerland, who also play in such a way.
England have not played three at the back from the start of a knockout fixture since the Euro 2020 final, which went to penalties against Italy.
England will face Switzerland on Saturday afternoon at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf with the match being exclusively broadcast on talkSPORT.
