Aintree 2.20 – Springwell Bay each-way
SPRINGWELL BAY is a strong traveller who can run a big race here off top weight for the Jonjo O’Neill Junior and Senior combination. The 7-year-old has had a fairly productive campaign, winning a competitive Handicap Hurdle over a similar trip to this at Cheltenham’s November meeting, then running some good races in defeat once upped to 3m.
However, on testing ground I am not convinced that he properly sees out three miles on deep ground, so with that in mind, I think this drop back to 2m4f will serve him well. He should travel nicely into contention and he could still be treated off a mark of 145 with the form of his Musselburgh defeat working out well. He looks like a major player here, and I think a big run is on the cards.

Aintree 2.55 – Mystical Power
I think MYSTICAL POWER is a class act and can get back in the winner’s enclosure here. This impeccably bred individual had been going from strength to strength and looked the winner of the Supreme when hitting the front, and then possibly getting outstayed by Slade Steel in bottomless ground.
He looks a horse with serious gears, and although the ground is likely to be testing, Aintree’s 2m should be much more to his liking. Quite simply, I think he just has a bit up his sleeve here and can stamp his authority on the field for the Willie Mullins and Mark Walsh combination. There should be a lot more to come.

Aintree 3.30 – Protektorat
This is a great race, stacked full of quality throughout the seven runners. You can make a case for the fresh horses, but I like the proven recent form of PROTEKTORAT, who put in an imperious performance when seeing off Envoi Allen and company to land the Ryanair. The combination of slow ground and the drop in trip looked much more his bag.
The Dan Skelton team continue in fine fettle, and although this is another tough race, the 9-year-old has an excellent record at Aintree (winning twice) and has winning course and distance form in the book. Harry Skelton takes the ride and they can get one step closer to getting brother Dan towards the trainers’ title with a win here. Providing the run at Prestbury Park hasn’t left it’s mark, Protektorat is ticking a lot of the right boxes.

Aintree 4.05 – Your Darling each-way
YOUR DARLING is a horse I want to be with in the Topham Chase for the red hot Ben Pauling team. The 9-year-old is a bit of an enigma, and probably hasn’t lived up to the early potential he showed. However, he was devastatingly good when last seen romping home at Ascot in November. He is up to 137 now, but the key to him appears to be keeping him fresh.
His record off the back of a 100-day or more layoff is phenomenal, and has been targeted at this since his win at the back-end of last year. He is a great jumper and strong traveller when on-song and I think he will be absolutely primed to the max for this encounter. Underfoot conditions won’t really matter, trip and track will be spot on, and I think he can run a massive race for the Naunton Downs outfit.
