Fernando Alonso has ended speculation about his Formula 1 future by re-signing with Aston Martin.
The Spaniard has committed his future to his team with his existing deal set to expire at the end of the 2024 season.
Alonso has now signed a multi-year contract that runs until 2026, a surprise move given that he’s now 42 years of age.
Alonso is a legendary figure in F1 and had been heavily linked with a move to join Mercedes for the 2025 season.
Toto Wolff’s side are looking for an experienced driver to join the team following Lewis Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari from next season.
However Hamilton’s replacement will not be Alonso, with the Spaniard set to stay with Aston Martin.
Alonso was also linked with a move to Red Bull amid the uncertainty over Max Verstappen’s future in light of the Christian Horner sexting scandal.
Alonso is attracting admiring glances with the 42-year-old sitting eighth in the drivers’ championship, performing well above expectation at Aston Martin after securing a P6 finish in last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.
Asked if Aston Martin’s struggles could prompt him to speak to Toto Wolff about a move to Mercedes, Alonso said: “That’s a very good question but Mercedes are behind us, so it doesn’t feel that attractive [either].”
