F1 in talks over potential new race in Asia – report

Formula 1 is seemingly eager to expand its presence in Asia with the injection of a new race in the region, according to a report.

After five years, the Chinese Grand Prix returned to the schedule last weekend with Max Verstappen emerging victorious.

While in the area, RacigNews365 can confirm that F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali will visit two other Asian countries this week to discuss the possibility of a new event.

One of the touted options is Thailand, which has voiced its desire to bring F1 to the country going forward.

“Basically, if F1 is going to be held in Thailand, we want it to be held on the roads – if possible, on Ratchadamnoen around Rattanakosin Island,” government spokesperson Chai Watcharong told Thansettakij.

“We are currently working on the matter.”

Another interested party

According to F1 itself, there is no shortage of interested parties to bring the series to their nation.

F1 is set to visit three Asian countries during its 24-race schedule this year, having already hosted events in Japan and China before a trip to Singapore later in the campaign.

Also being lined up for a spot on the schedule is South Korea, which is seeking a return to the calendar.

The country hosted F1 for four years from 2010 to 2013 with Sebastian Vettel emerging victorious at the last three visits to the Korea International Circuit.
