Raphael Varane might have left Manchester United but his injury woes have remained.
The former Real Madrid star saw his Old Trafford career blighted by issues and exited the club as a free agent in the summer after a three-year stint.
Como was his destination, the newly-promoted Serie A side a fine place for a player to see out a career.
However, it’s not gone as planned for the four-time Champions League winner.
He started for Como in their Coppa Italia clash with Sampdoria but the centre-back last just 23 minutes.
Head coach Cesc Fabregas would have hoped for just a short-term delay to Varane’s Serie A debut.
However, it now appears the French World Cup winner is set for a lengthy absence with a thigh issue.
Como have seen fit to leave Varane out of their squad until the next registration date.
So far, Arsenal and Barcelona legend Cesc Fabregas has called on Edoardo Goldaniga, Federico Barba, and Alberto Dossena at centre-back.
However, Germjan defender Marc-Oliver Kempf was added to the squad this week as Como prepare for the campaign without Varane.
The former Red Devil wasn’t Fabregas’ only high profile signing in the summer transfer window.
The ex-Spain international also brought in veteran compatriots Alberto Moreno and Pepe Reina.
They were then followed later in the window by ex-Barcelona teammate Sergi Roberto.
A raid on Real Madrid was also confirmed as Como snapped up 19-year-old talent Nico Paz.
Elsewhere, experienced Serie A stars Emil Audero and Andrea Belotti were also added, among several other stars.
However, it’s not been the best start to the season with a 3-0 loss to Juventus on the opening weekend and a 1-1 draw with Cagliari following.
Now they will face Udinese – but Varane won’t be able to help.
