Erik ten Hag has said that he won’t be starting Harry Maguire to aid his England hopes unless it’s to the benefit of Manchester United.
The central defender has come back into contention at Old Trafford in recent weeks and was even named in the starting line-up for last weekend’s victory over West Ham.
Despite making a number of substitute appearances, the 29-year-old has started just once in three months for United meaning that the defender is really lacking in match fitness.
With Gareth Southgate naming his squad next week, Maguire will be hoping to get some substantial minutes under his belt against Aston Villa and Fulham in the next week.
But asked whether Maguire will get the starts that he craves, Ten Hag stated that he won’t be making any decisions to benefit England.
He said: “We have to win as Manchester United, clear, and I hope that we perform well and that the England manager takes as many players as possible from Manchester United in the squad.
Victor Lindelof was named in the starting XI alongside Lisandro Martinez against Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday night and Ten Hag says that he’ll have a difficult decision to make regarding who starts in the heart of his defence.
“I have to think about it,” Ten Hag said. “I have to see Aston Villa, and it’s going to be difficult because we don’t know, it’s a new manager. So I have to have a look and analyse that team and then we have a choice.
“But, I just said, Licha (Martinez) and Victor, they played really well together over some more games but I think also Licha and Harry on Sunday against West Ham United: also a clean sheet and they also did really well.
“It’s a choice I make. When I choose one there is nothing against the other.”
