England vs Slovenia predictions
England have four points to their name and are in effect through to the last 16 of Euro 2024 with one group game to spare. Yet theirs is not a happy camp.
For good reason too. England beat Serbia 1-0 on matchday one, then drew 1-1 with Denmark last time out. But they have not yet played well in Germany. Unless they improve quickly, it is hard to see this team going all the way.
The problem is certainly not a lack of talent. Virtually every team at this tournament would welcome the likes of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and John Stones into their starting XI, never mind their 26-man squad.
But England have been deeply unimpressive up to now. This side is less than the sum of its parts.
Before the action got under way, the key question mark was over the defence. In fact, it has stood up pretty well so far, giving up few clear-cut chances in either game. Marc Guehi, previously untested at this level, has been England’s best player.
There are multiple issues elsewhere, though. The tendency to sit deep once a lead has been established is as baffling as it is risky. The lack of energy and bite in midfield is a problem. Up front, England have been extremely predictable and relatively easy to defend against.
Perhaps the biggest cause for concern is their work in possession. England have not kept the ball anywhere near well enough. In the second half against Serbia and for most of the Denmark match, the Three Lions played reactive football, allowing their opponents to dictate the game.
There is still time to get things right, but Southgate is under pressure to make changes. The Trent Alexander-Arnold midfield experiment is surely over, but it will be fascinating to see how many other alterations Southgate makes to the XI to face Slovenia.
Is Harry Kane still undroppable? Should Foden be given a different role? Will it be Connor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo or Adam Wharton deployed in midfield? Questions abound.
England vs Slovenia betting tips
England and Slovenia will do battle as Group C comes to an end on Tuesday evening.
England to win by 1 goal – 11/4 (bet365)
The positive for England is that a win here would send them through as Group C winners. They would even end up being on what looks to be the kinder side of the draw.
A draw would send them to the next round, but it would leave England vulnerable to finishing second – potentially setting up a last-16 clash with Germany.
As for Slovenia, they realistically need to win this game to go through, although a draw could be enough depending on other results.

Given the breadth of their issues so far, it is hard to see England suddenly turning on the style in Cologne.
Slovenia have been competitive in both their matches to date. They have genuine quality at both ends of the pitch in goalkeeper Jan Oblak and centre-forward Benjamin Sesko. Their 4-4-2 formation is compact and difficult to play through.
England should nevertheless get the job done, but we do not anticipate a thrashing

England/England half-time/full-time – Evens (Betfred)
In fairness to England, they have started both games pretty well. Bellingham opened the scoring against Serbia in the 13th minute, while Kane put England in front against Denmark with 18 minutes on the clock.
In theory, an early goal should ease nerves but that did not happen against either Serbia or Denmark. England must show they can manage a game once they are ahead.
Yet this bet still looks like good value. Only Portugal have given up fewer expected goals in the first two games than England. For all their faults, Southgate’s charges are not giving much away defensively.
If England can establish an advantage in the opening 45 minutes at the RheinEnergieStadion, we like their chances of coming out on top.

Bukayo Saka to score or assist – 5/6 (Sky Bet)
Bukayo Saka did not get the pre-tournament fanfare of Bellingham, Foden or Kane, but he feels like the only part of the England attack that is functioning well right now.
Saka is the only member of that quartet willing to stretch the play by running in behind. He also excels with the ball at his feet and put in several dangerous crosses against both Serbia and Denmark. Indeed, it was his right-footed delivery that set up Bellingham’s header in the first game.
Whereas Foden’s senior England career has been pretty disappointing so far, Saka has generally played well for his country.
The Arsenal man is one of the best forwards in the world and he will be determined to make an impact on this game against Slovenia.
It is hard to see Southgate dropping Saka, who will be one of England’s primary threats on Tuesday.
