England v Iceland preview
England take on Iceland for their final match before their Euro 2024 campaign gets underway, fresh from a 3-0 win over Bosnia in Newcastle on Monday night, in which goals from Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Kane secured victory in Tyneside.
The win marked England’s first this calendar year and ended a run of three consecutive matches without victory for Gareth Southgate’s side ahead of their Euro 2024 campaign, which they head into as the pre-tournament favourites.
The Three Lions kick off their tournament in Gelsenkirchen next Sunday night with a match against Serbia, before heading to Frankfurt to play Denmark and closing out their Group C campaign against Slovenia in Cologne.
Friday’s opponents Iceland were just 45 minutes away from securing qualification to Euro 2024 in their play-off final, but conceded twice in the second half to Ukraine who overturned a 1-0 deficit in Poland to book their place in Germany this summer.
The defeat put an end to a three-match winning streak for Iceland, who are managed by former Manchester City and Norwich defender Age Hareide, who was also capped 50 times by Norway as a player.
Iceland finished fourth in their qualifying group for the Euros behind Portugal, Slovakia and Luxembourg before defeat Israel in the semi final of the play-offs but falling at the final hurdle.
England have won three of the last four matches matches between themselves and Iceland, losing only once in their history to the Nordic side, famously in the second round of Euro 2016 which saw the end of Roy Hodgson’s spell in charge of England.
