Southgate’s thoughts
England manager Gareth Southgate has been speaking to the BBC about the 1-1 draw with Denmark.
He said: “The performance was clearly not what we would have hoped.
“We aren’t using the ball well enough, and if you do that, you are going to suffer, so there is another level that we’ve got to find.”
When asked if he was telling the team to drop deeper, he said: “No.
“We are playing teams that are quite fluid, and it’s difficult to get pressure on them, but we have to do that better than we have done these two matches.
“That’s part of the problem, but also keeping the ball is part of the problem.”
Eriksen proud of Denmark
Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen was pleased with his country’s performance against England.
Speaking to the BBC, he said: “We are disappointed not to get the win, but for us, it was a better game.
“England didn’t surprise us, but we hurt them with the chances we had, and we should have won.
“I don’t think England dropped deeper, I thought the game was even.”
No minutes for Palmer or Gordon
Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon managed 65 goal contributions between them in 96 appearances last season.
Palmer was Chelsea’s best player by miles and ensured the club finished sixth, while Gordon was sublime for Newcastle and was one of the best left wingers in the country.
Yet, they’ve both not played a single minute of football so far.
It seems strange players in such good form are being totally ignored.
Of course, Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze also had great seasons, but it might be time to try something new.
Kane reacts
England captain Harry Kane has been speaking to the BBC about the Three Lions’ 1-1 draw with Denmark.
He said: “I think we said before the tournament there’s no easy games and I think that’s showing.
“We’ve got levels we can reach and we can be better both with and without the ball. I think the sign of a good team is when you’re not playing at your best and still find a way to get results like we have in the last two games.
“We’re top of the group. We know we can improve. I know there will probably loads of noise and a bit of disappointment back home but we experienced this in the last Euros as well when we drew to Scotland.
“Step by step, we’ll get there.”
O’Hara and Cundy slam England
We’ve already seen Jamie O’Hara’s England tweet, but he let rip on the talkSPORT YouTube stream, along with Jason Cundy.
O’Hara said: “We look like Scotland right now. What am I watching? We look like Scotland. Mate, we are awful.
“This has been an absolutely diabolical England performance. Only one player deserves to be in an England shirt today is Marc Guehi.
“Awful performance. Awful performance from England, terrible. We don’t deserve to win. I can’t believe how bad of an England performance this has been. This has been coming, though.”
Meanwhile, Cundy added: “I think this is probably the worst performance under Southgate in a tournament.
“We are stinking Frankfurt out, we are stinking Germany out.”
