Ryan Garcia has come in 3.2lbs overweight for his fight against Devin Haney on Saturday night.
The rival American boxing stars are set to clash in New York for Haney’s WBC super-lightweight world title, live on talkSPORT, but the belt will now not be on the line for the challenger to win.
Haney successfully made the 140lbs super-lightweight limit at the official commission weigh-in, which took place behind closed doors on Friday.
Garcia however, did not.
He instead weighed in 3.2lbs over the limit at 143.2lbs.
Usually when a fighter is slightly overweight, they are given extra time by the commission to make the agreed limit.
However, the New York Commission have on this occasion refused this for Garcia because he was so far over 140lbs.
This briefly threw the fight into late chaos, with both camps having to negotiate a deal to allow it to proceed as a non-title bout, which they have now successfully done.
Garcia will not be able to win Haney’s WBC super-lightweight world title and, according to Haney, will pay him $1.5million for missing weigh by three pounds, as they bet at Thursday’s press conference.
During the presser, the topic of making weight featured heavily.
Some fans took to to social media and shared opinions that Haney looked drained.
However, up on stage it was the champion’s camp who expressed concerns over whether Garcia would indeed make the 140lbs limit.
The challenger responded to this by claiming he would happily bet $500,000 that he will make weight.
Haney responded by challenging Garcia to pay him $500,000 per pound he is over the limit.
Garcia accepted with no hesitation and the pair shook hands.
Now, he has agreed to pay Haney $1,500,000.
Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia will be live on talkSPORT from 4am on Sunday morning.
