David Benavidez has ripped into Canelo Alvarez’s demand of $200 million to accept their grudge fight.
Alvarez recently defeated Jaime Munguia in a dominant display, which once again stirred up calls for him to fight long-term rival Benavidez.
The undefeated challenger has issued regular call-outs to the undisputed 168lbs champion, but ‘Canelo’ has yet to budge and entertain fight talks.
When assessing if the fight could happen after the pound-for-pound superstar’s latest victory, Benavidez insisted the demand is just simply too much.
He told 210 Boxing TV: “Nobody’s going to give $200 million for that.
“If somebody can come up to $200 million we make a go fund account maybe we’ll get it, but as of right now, nobody’s giving $200 million for that fight.
“I think he’s getting put into a corner now where he’s running out of excuses.
“He said the only thing I bring is 25 extra pounds and I’m not worth nothing, but he’s asking for $200 million.”
Benavidez still holds mandatory status for Alvarez’s WBC belt, but is set to move up to 175lbs in his next outing.
He will face Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15 for the WBC interim light-heavyweight belt, which could also open the door to a fight at a new weight.
The potential challenger’s team claimed a $55 million purse offer had been made to Alvarez, a claim which his team subsequently moved to deny.
He instead demanded that it would take $200 million to accept any showdown, which is highly unlikely to materialise.
Although prior to his ‘Cinco De Mayo’ win, the 32-year-old did make a rare suggestion that he may be softening his stance to the bout.
Footage even showed the pair exchanging gestures and hinting at a fight following Canelo’s win.
It will remain a hot topic as to whether the pair will do battle, but several alternative options are available.
Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh has even suggested Alvarez could do battle with Terence Crawford in a mega-fight at the back end of 2024.
