Danny Simpson is so confident of winning his boxing debut that he’s put one of his most prized possessions on the line.
The former defender was famously part of the Leicester City team that overcame odds of 5000-1 to win the Premier League title in 2016.
Last month, Simpson announced his retirement from professional football before confirming that he is set to switch sports for a fight with YouTuber Danny Aarons.
On Saturday, the 37-year-old will get in the ring for the first time during KSI’s latest Misfits Boxing event, which will take place at the 3Arena in Dublin.
Simpson and Aarons came together for a face-to-face interview and the influencer suggested they up the stakes by putting their ‘gold awards’ on the line.
“I wanted to bring this to you,” he said.
“You won the Premier League. You got something for that, right?
“What colour is the medal? It’s gold. When I got 1 million subscribers on YouTube, I got a gold YouTube play button. We both have a gold award.
“The winner gets the loser’s gold reward.”
Simpson didn’t hesitate to accept the bet. The two friendly rivals shook hands to make things official, much to the surprise of his opponent.
“It would mean everything to me [to win],” Aarons said.
“It means even more now I get his Premier League medal. I can’t believe he said yes to that. You can’t go back on that, handshakes are on camera.
“So, if I didn’t want to win already, I know want to win now.”
Simpson fired back his Aarons, who is a big fan of Tottenham Hotspur.
He said: “I don’t mind shaking hands because that’s not gonna happen.
“You’re only saying that because it’s the closest time Spurs will ever get to a medal.”
“One hundred per cent, one million per cent,” Aarons replied.
“I’ll have a Premier League medal before my own club, I have to have it. I’ll take it.”
Simpson joked: “You caught me off guard with that, but that’s not going to happen.”
