Given his three goals, Dani Olmo will be an unwelcome sight for every England player, but especially Harry Kane.
The RB Leipzig playmaker has been one of the stars of Euro 2024 and will be desperate to win the whole thing at England’s expense in the final, which is live on talkSPORT.
Olmo is on a three-game scoring streak, with efforts against Germany and France not only beautiful, but absolutely priceless.
All of this has come with Olmo not even being a starter – Barcelona’s Pedri was their playmaker to begin the campaign – but ever since a Toni Kroos-inflicted injury in the quarter-final, their no.10 has stolen the show.
It means he could once again be the difference to Harry Kane winning a trophy, something the England captain is desperate to do.
The top scoring striker stunned the football world by finally leaving Tottenham and moving to Bayern Munich last summer where he was hoping to have more luck in winning major club honours. Germany’s version of the Community Shield – the Super Cup – was up first.
Standing in his way was Olmo, who was preparing for the 2023/24 season after two injury-hit campaigns. Off the back of a second consecutive DFB Pokal win, he and Leipzig had their eyes on a first German Super Cup.
You would have put your money on Bayern winning and Kane, on the bench, coming on to have a say as he so often had for Spurs and England.
However, by the time he came on, in the 64th minute for his first Bayern appearance, they were two down, and four minutes later it was three.
The scorer of each of those goals? Olmo. The Spaniard had stunned Bayern with his first career hat-trick, and the second effort, a roulette and poke through the goalkeeper’s legs, was one of the best the Super Cup had ever seen.
Kane had again seen a trophy slip through his fingers, perhaps the easiest one yet, but he would go on to start his Bundesliga campaign at a record pace.
Kane’s goals kept Bayern top of the league until the same side, Leipzig, stole points from them on September 30th and gave Bayer Leverkusen a league lead they never gave up.
He got some form of revenge in the reverse fixture when he scored twice to cut off Leipzig’s faint title hopes, but by then both teams were essentially out of the title race, and Bayern were heading for a first trophyless season in 12 years, extending Kane’s drought.
It’s not a stretch to say the unprecedentedly poor campaign was triggered by Olmo, with then-Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel increasingly tetchy after the match, clashing with his superiors over transfer activity and setting the tone for a negative, spiralling season that ended in disaster.
Almost a year on and Kane face Olmo again, chasing to awards. Ahead of the Euro 2024 final they have both scored three goals and are up for a possible Golden Boot, but both want a first major trophy for their country.
The attention in the media and among England’s coaching staff may well be on youngsters Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams as well as how to stop the unbeaten Rodri, but Kane will understandably have another focus, and the chance to conquer one of his biggest demons on the way to finally clinching glory.
