Saturday Update
WWE
- After SmackDown, Cody Rhodes spoke to the Lyon, France crowd and praised them for how loud they were. Rhodes said that, because the fans were so loud, he couldn’t hear himself or AJ Styles during their face-to-face segment: “Never before have I not been able to hear myself or somebody in the ring during an interview. Beautiful #SmackDown”
- Paul “Triple H” Levesque shared that there were fans in the crowd who received noise-level warnings on their phones and watches:
- The @WWEUniverse in France literally received a warning about the noise level tonight at #SmackDown @LDLC_Arena. Absolutely insane. Like @myMotorhead said… ‘Only way to feel the noise is when it’s good and loud.’
- There was a development in The Bloodline story on SmackDown with Paul Heyman saying he hasn’t spoken to Roman Reigns since WrestleMania. Heyman said Reigns didn’t pull himself out of the WWE Draft, Heyman did it on his own because he can’t subject Reigns to all of the chaos that’s going on within The Bloodline right now.
- A new QR code was shown on SmackDown leading to a video that appears to be teasing the return of Bo Dallas. The word “Bolieve” can briefly be seen in the video.
- CM Punk, Big E, and Jackie Redmond will be panelists on today’s Backlash pre-show that streams live starting at noon Eastern.
- WWE uploaded a video with AJ Styles getting in the best shape of his life for Backlash.
- The announcement that WWE is making regarding WrestleMania today will happen after Backlash during NBC’s pre-race coverage of the Kentucky Derby: “Immediately following #WWEBacklash France, there will be a special #WrestleMania announcement during the 150th #KentuckyDerby pre-race show airing on @NBC”
- D-Von Dudley, who previously worked behind the scenes in WWE, told WhatCulture Wrestling that he’d like to get a crack at being part of the Paul Levesque era:
- Yes, but I haven’t done the Triple H era. I’ve been through the Vince era, but I would love to get a crack at…maybe even possibly doing the Triple H era, so to speak. You never know. I had fun when I was there, even during the Vince era. At times, it was extremely stressful, but we got through it and did what we had to do. But I never just got a chance to feel that new era.
- Levesque congratulated Ricochet on becoming the inaugural WWE Speed Champion:
- You always remember the first to ever do it. Nobody defines ‘speed’ like Ricochet. Congratulations to @KingRicochet on adding another title reign to his legacy and becoming the first-ever #WWESpeed Champion.
AEW/Other Wrestling
- During a Highspots Virtual Gimmick Table appearance, Wendi Richter responded to being mentioned by Toni Storm in AEW:
- Well, I didn’t even know she had been calling me out. Someone told me she’s been doing it on a regular basis. Well, money does talk. If they can cough up enough money, I’d take her on. I’d even give her the first swing. Bring it, Toni. You think you can beat me? I’d like to see it. I’m not afraid.
- Jim Ross was proud of Tony Khan for keeping kayfabe after the angle where he was laid out by The Elite:
- I was waiting to see if Tony was gonna follow through and complete the cycle by wearing a neck brace and he did. I was proud of him for doing that because it was old school. Now whether you like the angle or you didn’t like the angle, that’s another issue but him following through and wearing the neck brace…good for Tony Khan on that deal. That was old school like thinking and I’m really glad that he wore the neck brace.
- AEW’s Daniel Garcia will debut for House of Glory Wrestling at their Cinco de Mayo event in Queens, New York this Sunday.
- Legendary Winnipeg wrestling promoter Tony Condello was spotlighted in a video produced by AEW.
- A new GHC Heavyweight Champion was crowned today with Kaito Kiyomiya defeating El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. at Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Wrestle Magic 2024.
- With Matt Cardona out of action due to a torn pec, he’s been named the on-screen general manager for Game Changer Wrestling. It initially appeared that Danhausen won the GCW World Championship from Blake Christian last night, but Cardona restarted the match and Christian retained the title.
- After departing AEW, Ethan Page posted a “business update” where he teased that he was going to address the situation. Instead, the video was a troll where Page spoke about being a top-seller on Ringside Collectibles for two weeks in a row despite not being featured on television.
- Page will return to Wrestling Revolver at their show in Dayton, Ohio on May 17. He’s also been announced for Prestige Wrestling’s event in Portland, Oregon on July 12.
- In an interview with TMZ Sports, Nikki & Brie Garcia addressed if they could return to the ring in the future. Nikki said:
- The itch is there for sure. I think that’s the one thing that I realized — right now with Matteo [her son] being a toddler, it would just be too hard for me. Even if you wrestle one day a week, it’s all the travel that people don’t realize that you do.
- Brie added:
- I get to watch it every week, I get to see [Bryan Danielson] in that ring [and] my kids love to wrestle with him. That’s really fun for me, but I was like, ‘Until Bryan hangs up his boots, I can’t put my boots back on.’ The kids — there’s no way they can have mommy and daddy on the road all the time.
- Nikki said that, if they were to return, she doesn’t know which promotion it would be for:
- I think it’s hard to know where that would be. As you know, WWE when that’s your home, it’s always your home. But I think what we’re fortunate is then we make all these great friends and they’re wrestling everywhere … so I don’t know, we’ll see
- Matthew Justice and Ernest “The Cat” Miller will be entrants in MLW Battle Riot VI in Atlanta on Saturday, June 1. The event will stream live on TrillerTV+.
