Southampton head into Wednesday night’s EFL Cup second round tie looking for their first win of the season after falling to 1-0 defeats in each of their opening two Premier League games of the new campaign.

Russell Martin’s side are without a point so far in their return to the top flight following victory in last season’s Championship play-off final, having started the campaign with defeat at St James’ Park to Newcastle, before falling at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Saints sit just outside the relegation zone on goal difference, but might just see an EFL Cup tie against a team from the division below as the perfect chance to get a win on the board and give their confidence a boost ahead between now and the first international break of the season.

The Hampshire coast side take on a Cardiff side who have also struggled in the opening weeks of the new season, having just picked up their first point of the new campaign in last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Swansea in the south Wales derby.

Erol Bulut’s side are still rooted to the bottom of the Championship table despite the point away from home, having fallen 2-0 at home to Sunderland on the opening day of the season, which was followed by a 5-0 thrashing at Burnley the following week.

Sandwiched between those two defeats was a 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers in the first round of the EFL Cup, which saw the Bluebirds book themselves a home Premier League tie for the chance to reach the third round, when the teams competing in Europe join the competition.

Perhaps surprisingly, Cardiff have won four of their last five matches against the Saints, including the most recent visit back in April earlier this year.
