David Benavidez caught the eye of Canelo Alvarez after his win over Jaime Munguia.
Alvarez retained his undisputed 168lbs world titles with a unanimous decision win over his fellow Mexican, who he dropped in the fourth round with a thunderous right uppercut.
The narrative prior to the fight was largely surrounding the champion’s rival Benavidez, who has regularly called for the pair to touch gloves in recent months.
Benavidez was ringside to watch his potential opponent rally to victory, but did not clamber in the ring and make his challenge face-to-face.
However, the undefeated star did catch the eye of Alvarez and the pair exchanged gestures as tensions came to the surface.
Canelo gave a wry smile and pointed to the ring as if to beckon his adversary into the ring.
The potential challenger simply stood with his arms wide as if suggesting he was ready to do battle this year.
It is no surprise the champion almost urged Benavidez into the ring, given he suggested he would be open to facing his rival on the same night as Munguia.
Of course, that was impossible but he appeared to have softened his stance on a meeting with the talented star.
Canelo had suggested he would need a purse of $200 million to accept the fight, and he reiterated that statement at the post-fight press conference.
He said: “If the money’s right. I can fight [Benavidez] right now.
“I don’t give a s***. It’s only a matter of money at this point. Everybody is asking for everything.
“When I fought [Erislandy] Lara, Austin Trout, Miguel Angel Cotto, [Floyd] Mayweather, Billy Joe Saunders, GGG, everybody said I don’t want to fight them, and I fought all of them.
“So right now I can do whatever I want.”
Despite being urged by the boxing world to come together, it still appears unlikely with Benavidez set to make the switch to 175lbs.
‘The Monster’ will next face Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15, but will likely remain open to any challenge back down at his previous weight.
