Belgium vs Slovakia predictions
Belgium’s golden generation were never quite able to get over the line at a major tournament. That has left the Red Devils with the ignominy of being the only side to have reached No.1 in the FIFA Rankings without ever having won a World Cup or continental competition.
Perhaps that fact will no longer be true in a month’s time. Belgium were among the main favourites to win World Cup 2018 and Euro 2020, but they are more like outsiders this time around. Yet that could actually suit them.
A few members of the aforementioned golden generation are still around. Romelu Lukaku, the country’s all-time leading scorer, leads the line. Kevin De Bruyne remains as essential as ever aged 33.
Four years his senior, Jan Vertonghen remains a starter at centre-back when fit. Axel Witsel is also involved once again, but Thibaut Courtois has not been called up after a falling-out with Domenico Tedesco, the man chosen to replace Roberto Martinez.
It is a case of so far, so good for Tedesco. Belgium have not lost any of their 14 contests under his guidance.
The German-Italian looks to have found a healthy balance between experience and youth: eight members of his squad are aged 23 or under, including Jeremy Doku, Johan Bakayoko and Amadou Onana. Lois Openda, who scored 28 goals for RB Leipzig last term, is 24.
Belgium have also been handed a reasonably kind group draw, containing as it does Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania. It could have been much worse, as fellow Pot 1 teams like France and Spain can attest.
Belgium are eighth-favourites at the time of writing, but their price will surely shorten if they sail through Group E as expected.
Of course, Tedesco will be preaching caution to his players. Belgium went out in the group stage at World Cup 2022, so looking too far ahead could be a recipe for disaster.
Belgium vs Slovakia betting tips
Belgium will kick-start their Euro 2024 campaign against Slovakia in Frankfurt on Monday.
Belgium to win and over 2.5 goals – 5/4 (bet365)
While other international managers have spent the last few months drawing up plans for Euro 2024 and flying across the continent to watch their players in action for their clubs, Francesco Calzona was otherwise engaged.
Formerly an assistant at Napoli, Calzona answered the Italian outfit’s call when they sacked Walter Mazzarri in February, agreeing to lead the team for the remainder of the season.
Not everyone in Slovakia was pleased with that decision. Whether or not it leaves them at a disadvantage this summer remains to be seen.

There is not a great deal of star quality within the squad chosen by Calzona, who has continually insisted his team will not merely defend in a low block and hope for the best.
That would probably be the wisest strategy against Belgium, but Slovakia look set to build from the back and commit bodies to attack when they can.
We could be in store for an open game at the Frankfurt Arena. With their speed in transition, that will be music to Belgian ears.

Goal in both halves – 4/6 (talkSPORT BET)
With the above in mind, this looks like another attractive selection for the second game taking place on Monday.
Another reason to consider it is Belgium’s ongoing injury problems at the back.
Thomas Meunier, Arthur Theate and Jan Vertonghen are both out of this game, while Axel Witsel – who has spent the domestic season playing at centre-half for Atletico Madrid – is a doubt.
Tedesco will have to select a weakened defence to face Slovakia, who will therefore feel they have a decent chance of finding the back of the net.
This bet only requires there to be one goal scored by either team in each half. It looks like a solid pick at the price listed here.

Romelu Lukaku to score any time – Evens (VBET)
Lukaku faces an uncertain future at club level. He scored 21 goals in all competitions for Roma, but he was only on loan at the Stadio Olimpico and is now due to return to parent club Chelsea.
Lukaku has burned his bridges in west London, though, with the Blues reportedly looking to get him off their books permanently this summer.
The striker has said he is open to the idea of joining a team in the Saudi Pro League, a move which would represent his exit from the highest level of the club game.
Lukaku has long split opinion, but it is hard to criticise his record for his country: in 115 appearances for the Red Devils, he has scored 85 goals.
He will be confident of adding to his tally this weekend. With the likes of Doku and Leandro Trossard supplying the ammunition, Lukaku should get plenty of chances in this one.
