Plastic cups were thrown at Gareth Southgate as he applauded booing fans after England’s 0-0 draw against Slovenia at Euro 2024.
England have topped Group C at Euro 2024 after a 0-0 draw against Slovenia in Cologne after Denmark and Serbia also played out a bore draw in the other match.
But while the Three Lions might have earned a spot in the knockout rounds, a number of travelling fans were not happy with the performance at full-time.
As Southgate made his way around the stadium to applaud the supporters, cups were seen being thrown at the England boss.
There was a mixture of boos and cheers that rang around the ground with many still unconvinced by England’s display, which saw them fail to truly test Jan Oblak in the Slovenian net.
When asked about the performance, Southgate said: “I thought we were much improved, we created some good openings and at the moment it’s hard for for us.
“We’re not quite getting that break in front of goal. I thought the boys that came on had a good impact and we had the discipline to keep a clean sheet which means we top the group.
“I understand some reaction but its a strange environment we’re playing in.
Many expected England to raise their performance after a turgid 1-1 against Denmark on Thursday.
Indeed, Southgate promised that fans would see ‘the real England’ on Tuesday night to finish their Euro 2024 group campaign.
However, if anything, this was an even more difficult watch, though the mood in the camp still remains positive.
England captain Harry Kane insisted that they had met their target by finishing top of the group and also said this was their best performance.
He told ITV after the match: “That was the aim before the start of the tournament. Come top of the group and control our destiny.
“I thought we played a lot better than the other games. We couldn’t just find that finish but we look forward to the next one.
“We created some half chances and there were some that we could maybe have done better.”
England now face either the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Turkey or Georgia on Sunday afternoon, though the situation is still complicated.
England will take on Ronald Koeman’s side, who finished third in Group D earlier on Tuesday after losing to Austria, unless the Czech Republic beat Turkey or Georgia are victorious against Portugal in Group F.
That would then drastically change the third-placed table, with Turkey, Czech Republic and Georgia all vying for Hungary’s spot.
