France head into their opening match of Euro 2024 as one of the main contenders to lift the Henri Delaunay trophy for what would be a record-equalling third time in their history.
Didier Deschamps’ side were the best performing European nation at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar 18 months ago, losing the final on penalties, and with a star studded squad, arguably the strongest in the tournament, expectations are high for them ahead of the coming weeks.
Les Bleus qualified for this summer’s Euros by finishing top of their qualification group, winning seven of their eight matches, only dropping points once qualification was confirmed, and even broke their own record for their biggest ever win, beating Gibraltar 14-0 back in November.
Since securing qualification to their 15th successive major competition, the French have won two of their four friendlies since the turn of the year, losing 2-0 at home to Germany in March before back to back wins over wins over Chile and Luxembourg preceded a goalless draw against Canada in their final pre-Euro 2024 friendly.
Austria head into the Euros as one of many viewers’ dark horses for the finals, with the nation having lost just one of their last 16 matches dating back to September 2022, which includes winning six of their last seven outings, drawing the other.
Managed by former Manchester United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick, Austria finished just one point behind Belgium in their qualifying campaign to reach their third successive European championship.
Since qualifying Das Team have won five of their six friendlies, including wins over Germany, Slovakia, Serbia, and a 6-1 win over Turkey, before drawing 1-1 away in Switzerland in their final warm up match at the start of the month.
Austria face a tough task getting out of the group at advancing to the knockout stage, having not only been drawn into Group D with France, but also 1988 winners the Netherlands, along with Poland, who looked impressive their opener against the Dutch despite falling to defeat.
France lead the overall head-to-head between the two nations 13-9 in wins, including their most recent match, a 2-0 home win in the Nations League in September 2022, with Austria winning just one of the last 10 meetings between the sides in the last 54 years.
