Arsenal v Wolves preview
Arsenal start their new Premier League campaign with a home fixture against Wolves as they look to kickstart the season with a win in a bid to win themselves a first league title in 21 years.
Mikel Arteta’s side have finished as runners up in each of the last two seasons despite having led the league for large portions of each campaign, but have ultimately come up short to an all-conquering Manchester City side on both occasions.
The Gunners will be hoping it’s third time lucky this time around having strengthened their defensive forces with the signing of Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori, as well as making the loan signing of David Raya a permanent one.
Pre-season has gone well for the north London side, who won four of their five friendlies (albeit one on penalties), including a thumping 4-1 win against German champions Bayer Leverkusen, only falling to a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in Philadelphia last month.
Wolves enjoyed a successful season last time out surviving a serious wobble in the summer when manager Julen Lopetegui left the club just a week before their season opener and was quickly replaced by Gary O’Neil.
The majority of Premier League fans had Wolves as a near-certainty to go down with all the unrest going on off the pitch in the summer, but O’Neil led the side to a comfortable 14th place finish and has since signed a new four-year deal at Molineux.
The West Midlands side will have to deal with the departures of key first team players Pedro Neto and Max Kilman, to Chelsea and West Ham respectively, for a combined £100m, but have only managed to reinvest in around £25m worth of signings to replace them.
Portugal U21 international Rodrigo Gomes from Braga has been their most expensive signing of the window so far for around £13m.
The Wolves faithful will be hopeful of another season of comfortable midtable action, but with the club having sold their best forward and their best defender without replacing either, some fans may be fearing the worst.
Arsenal have won each of their last six games against Wolves, while Arteta also boasts a 100% winning record against O’Neil across their three previous managerial meetings.
📝 Arsenal v Wolves betting tips
Arsenal are touted as strong favourites for Saturday’s season opener having strengthened over the summer, in stark contrast to their opponents.
BetMGM’s pricing of 24/5 for Arsenal to win to nil and over 3.5 goals in the game is a real tempter, with the Gunners likely to want to show their intent early on in this campaign as they bid for a first Premier League title in 21 years.
