Arsenal could become the first team in 35 years to win the English top-flight after starting the final day outside of top spot.
The last time that any English side won the league title after starting their final match in second place or below was in the 1988/89 season.
So who were the team to do it? Of course it was the Gunners.
Led by manager George Graham, Arsenal headed to Anfield knowing that they needed to beat title rivals Liverpool – who occupied top spot – by two goals if they were to pip Kenny Dalglish’s side to the post.
Alan Smith put the north London side 1-0 up after 53 minutes with his 23rd first division goal of the season, setting up a dramatic finale.
With Arsenal pushing forward, Michael Thomas broke through and prodded the ball home to give Arsenal a 2-0 win and their first title in 18 years.
In the present day, Mikel Arteta will be desperate to secure the Premier League crown for Arsenal.
It has been 20 years since they last won the league, with their previous victory coming under Arsene Wenger in 2003/04.
But they look set to miss out to Manchester City for a second successive season.
The Citizens’ 2-0 win over Tottenham midweek lifted Pep Guardiola’s men two points clear of the north London giants heading into the final weekend.
And City know that a win over West Ham would see them win a historic fourth consecutive title.
Should Man City slip up, Arsenal would need to record a victory over Everton to end two decades of hurt.
The Gunners boast a superior goal difference, which would ensure them that they would come out on top if the two sides were level on points.
Arsenal’s clash with Everton will be exclusively live on talkSPORT on Sunday with commentary coming from Sam Matterface and former England striker Darren Bent.
