Amanda Staveley has revealed she cried at the Newcastle fan banner dedicated to her and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi.
The former Magpies co-owners left the club this summer after three years at St James’ Park.
The couple sold their shares in July, during the off-season, but Newcastle fans still made sure to show their gratitude in their opening game of the new campaign.
Before their dramatic 1-0 home win over Southampton, fans held up a banner of the pair with the caption ‘thank you’.
And Staveley has taken to Instagram to re-post a photo of the banner and express how much the gesture meant.
The caption of the picture said: “I am both humbled and grateful for all the heartfelt messages of support today: I read every one, and I wish I could reply to you all personally.
“Seeing pictures of the stadium today made me cry – thank you to Wor flags for all your incredible work today and over the last few years.
“I know better than most, the incredible work you all put in at every game.
“Our fans are the best – and there is nowhere better than St James’.
“I will always be your Geordie girl… Wor Mandy.”
The pair became the public face of the Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) takeover in 2021.
Staveley and Reuben Brothers each assumed 10 per cent holdings and played a big role in brokering the purchase of the club from former unpopular owner Mike Ashley.
The couple took on the day-to-day runnings of the club on a rolling contract.
They helped bring in new manager Eddie Howe to replace Steve Bruce, as well as rebuilding the squad with players such as Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope.
They also oversaw Newcastle’s return to the Champions League last season.
However, they departed this summer after stating it was ‘time for the management team to have a chance to implement their business plan’.
Newcastle’s post-Staveley era continues next Sunday when they face Bournemouth away at the Vitality Stadium.
