Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane may have had to do a double take as he came up against the son of a music legend in a friendly.
Kane had barely featured in Bayern’s pre-season as he was afforded extra time off thanks to England’s run to the final of Euro 2024.
But the Three Lions skipper managed a ten-minute cameo last Saturday against Tottenham before playing the first half against Austrian Bundesliga side WSG Tirol.
Although Kane got on the scoresheet in the 3-0 win for Bayern, it was a late second half substitute from the Austrian outfit that stole the headlines.
In the 88th minute, Valentino Muller stepped off the pitch and on came midfielder Mathew Collins.
The 19-year-old just so happens to be the son of Phil Collins, the former Genesis drummer and frontman.
It didn’t take long for fans to enjoy a bit of wordplay based on some of Collins’ biggest hits.
Collins joined WSG Tirol in July this year after a successful trial having been let go by German side Hannover 96.
However, Collins is more likely to spend the upcoming season with Tirol’s reserve team, who compete in the Austrian fourth tier.
WSG Tirol II manager Manuel Ludwiger conceded he knew who Collins’ father was before he signed him but insisted he was signed on his talent alone.
“We Google the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers,” Ludwiger said.
“It was only then that we found out Mathew is Phil Collins’ son.
“We haven’t signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability.”
Collins is not the only successful child of the 73-year-old rock star.
His half-sister, Lily, is an actress and is best known for her work as the lead role in Emily in Paris.
